Chapter 4

Benor arrived back at the barge to find the others eating an early breakfast. Tallis was frying mushrooms and thin slices of mott ham in the same large pan.

Benor told the tale of his night’s adventures. When he mentioned Treddel’s Prospect, Ami’s eyes hardened but she said nothing.

When he finished she said coldly, “The older woman is almost certainly my Aunt. The younger is probably Tavi the maid. She’s from Partann; she was my mother’s maid and was taken on after my mother’s death. Tavi I can trust, she won’t betray me.” She pushed her chair back and stood up. “Everybody will be asleep at the moment, I’ll take the chance to go home and collect some more clothes, I can hardly keep borrowing Shena’s.”

“That’s sensible but a little risky,” Shena said. “Tallis can go with you, he needn’t go into the house but he’ll be on hand if anything goes wrong.

Tallis emptied the frying pan onto the plates. “Let us be away whilst our sleepers sleep.” He winked at Ami, “That’s from Foredeck’s Pastoral Enigma. Benor studied the urchin. The child might even be eleven, was probably male but with long hair and clothes that had been cut down to fit.

“I’m Nail, working for Mutt. He asks if you can be at the Council Building as soon as maybe. There’s two of them out and about. One’s your Lissel, the other’s the bald man.”

Benor reached for his jacket, hanging behind the door. “I’ll be on my way.”

The child turned and ran off. Benor stepped back into the galley. Things could be coming to a head. On impulse he fastened his knife to his belt - the fall of his jacket would hide it - and picked up his staff. Then he set off at a brisk walk to the Council Building.

He’d reached the foot of the ridge on which the municipal buildings sat when Nail appeared again. “They’ve left, heading towards the Warrens. They may be taking a short cut to somewhere. Drop back along the High Road and wait at the second spur. I’ll get you when we know where we’re going.”

He turned and ran back into the crowded street before Benor had time to reply. Benor turned and looked back the way he had come. It was a bare half a mile to the second spur; he could afford to stroll in a more leisurely manner. He quite enjoyed the walk, it was a
